The first step that can hep you eliminate stress when talking with others is listening better. While it is important that you have to remain authentic to yourself, if you truly want to remove stress from your conversation with others, you have to be able to listen to what they have to say without interrupting them or the least give them a chance to tell you about themselves or their ideas.

How do you demonstrate that you are listening to others when they are talking. You can ask questions. Don’t get into a shouting match. You must have the ability to listen to yourself and to others. Ask questions that show you have been listening. This will help you identify the key elements of the situation while ignoring outlandish comments. Use your questions to show empathy rather than skepticism and disdain. When you are dismissive of another person’s ideas, they can easily pick it up, and they will push back.

The problem with this approach is that it will lead to stress. Stress is not good for your heart as it can lead to high blood pressure, faster heart beat and the tightening of your blood vessels. They worst part is that stress can make you have sleepless nights. When you feel to sleep well, you body feels to recharge and get restorative sleep. The consequences will be that you can start the next day, grumpy, forgetful and unable to fully concentrate.

However, if your conversations better, you will have less stress, you have less things to regurgitate in your mind and you will find your self better able to sleep and less stressed out. One step that has helped me cut down on stress in my conversations is listening to others without challenging them or making them feel like if they are stupid.

The other step that can help you eliminate stress from your conversation with others is the ability to make moment by moment adjustments. This means that you need to have situational awareness when talking to others. When you start talking to someone and you discover that they are busy, make an adjustment. Don’t insist on continuing your conversations when you see from their body language or from what they are doing that your timing is not appropriate. If you continue you shall end up with a stressful encounter.

The third step that will help you to reduce stress from your conversation with others is the tone of your voice. Be nice and polite. Speak in a respectful tone of voice. Use words that are sweet to the ears and honey to the heart. Say, “Please”. Say, “Thank you”, There is an African proverb that says that the snail uses it sweet soft tongue to climb over thorns without getting hurt. What about you?
